It’s a Girl is a celebration of new beginnings and the gentle joy that accompanies them. At the time I made this box, I had six grandchildren, each sweet and special, and I love each one unconditionally. But I have only one granddaughter, a beautiful, energetic 2-year-old. Constantly in motion, she flows along exploring one thing, then the next, seemingly intent on solving the mysteries each presents. As I made this box, I had her in mind.

Crafted mostly from pink ivory—a wood renowned for its vibrant, rosy hue—this box embodies the sweetness and warmth of welcoming a new life. Pink ivory, often associated with rarity and preciousness, reflects the uniqueness of every child’s journey, bringing to life a sense of wonder in each delicate grain.

Inside, the box features a divider, creating two compartments—perfect for organizing small treasures, keepsakes, or mementos. A mahogany bottom lends the piece a touch of strength and stability, grounding the playful tones of the pink ivory with a subtle richness. It’s a harmonious pairing, a reminder of both the playful spirit and the deep bonds that family brings.

The lid, crafted from smooth basswood, features engraved concentric circles. These circles symbolize the idea of a complete rainbow, which is, in fact, a full circle even though we typically only see an arc. This design serves as a metaphor for how we experience life—seeing only part of the whole, as we cherish the visible moments. The engraved circles invite us to imagine what lies beyond, hinting at the unseen wonders and potential that are always present, much like the parts of a rainbow that remain hidden but known. It is a reminder that life’s beauty and potential often extends beyond what is immediately visible.
